THE SUPERVISION ROLE OF PARENTS FOR SOCIAL MEDIA CHILDREN USERS
The amount of social media users in Indonesia have been increased significantly, not only adults but also children in the elementary school. The various feature choices and the easiness in accessing social media become the main attraction for elementary school students to have their own social media account. The impacts of early age in utilizing the social media are cyberbullying and cyberporn. Thus, It becomes social problem. This research is conducted to describe the implementation of media literation by the parents to their children as the social media’s users. This research is a qualitative research and using phenomenology as the method. The result shows that there are only four basic skills in media literation among seven basic skills of Stanley J. Baran that are applied by the parents. The respondents use the social media as the media for communication need and as the education media for their children. The supervision by the parents are still limited to the preventive stage without any further analysis in the social media’s contents. The parents become the supervisor of their children by several ways such as applying strict rules in using the social media, becoming friend with their chilren’s account, limiting the internet data, personal approach and using the religious values.
